Bullet Journal Mental Health Tracking

The largest feature of my monthly spreads for September is my mental health tracking! I have two pages devoted to tracking my mental health, and with me, that’s a lot of space to devote to a single topic in my notebook.

Being on medication or going to therapy aren’t the only ways that we can take charge of our mental health and work on managing mental illness. They can help, but they aren’t the only resources. Self-awareness through my trackers has given me an edge to being on top of my management that I never had before I started doing it.

This month, I have three separate spreads: unhealthy habits and triggers; healthy habits and self-care; and symptoms and side effects. I also track my moods within these, and how they fluctuate over the day. My friends and family have commented that my moods can change very quickly in a day, so that’s something I’ve looked at and attempted to balance out. This month, I haven’t tracked my sleeping, but my sleeping has been fairly regular due to the sedative portion of my medication.

I like recording some of my “unhealthy” behaviours. They’re unhealthy in the sense that I have a suspicion they can interfere with my wellbeing that day—hence why I have caffeine and nightmares in the same section. Yesterday I had an awful dream and the rest of my day felt off because it kept intruding my thoughts, so I checked off “nightmare” for that day.

My self-care and unhealthy habits are side-by-side so I can see if I’m balancing out the two, or doing one more than the other, and how that affects my mood. I contemplated putting everything into one table, but I wanted to be able to compare my “good” and “bad” activities at a quick glance.

I started doing the “bubble” list last month to track some symptoms, and I’ve tweaked it to get more information tracked. I started doing the bubbles because they reminded me of material equipping in Final Fantasy VII. That’s really it. I wanted to have a “scale” of sorts to gage how I was feeling.

I’m not sure how much this has helped this month. My medication doubled a few days ago (thankfully), so I’m still adjusting to that. But these layouts are definitely the most eye-pleasing I’ve done. They’re both pragmatic and nice to look at.

Since I’ve only posted the blank spreads here, it’s hard to see how they look nice. However, I will have some pictures on my Instagram by the end of the month!

These spreads are some I’ll definitely repeat in the future.

My 5 Favourite Bullet Journal Trackers

Although trackers aren’t part of the original system developed for the bullet journal, they’ve become a popular collection among bujo junkies like myself. And for a good reason! They’re handy and contain information in charts that are readily accessible.

Here are five of my favourite trackers that I’ve used at some point in my bullet journalling.

1. Mood Tracker

One of my mental wellness goals from last year was to be more mindful and aware of myself. I started doing that by using mood trackers in my bullet journal. I’ve used a few arrangements, but I love my current set-up for July where I track my moods as they progress through the morning, afternoon, and evening. I’ve also tracked my moods based on a generalisation of the day overall. Having different colours for different moods and emotions will help decorate the spread, too! I like using a rainbow of some sort, so the reds and purples show my more “extreme” emotions (like depression and restlessness). I’ve also incorporated art, like the geode mood tracker, to shake things up!

2. Symptom Tracker

In line with my mental health, I have a tracker for symptoms of my mental illness and side effects of medication! I’ve only use it for two weeks now, and I need to tweak it for the second month of my medication. However, I think after I make changes, I’ll be able to better track my symptoms. I keep a journal alongside tracking my symptoms, so I have more details kept in a separate book, instead of my planner. I think I need a better colour coding system or key to improve the way I keep track of the information, since the current setup isn’t enough for me.

3. Sleep Tracker

When I started tracking my sleep—when I’d fall asleep, when I’d wake up, any naps I had—I noticed that I have awful sleep. My sleeping schedule (or lack thereof) was one of the key components in getting help for my health, and helped my doctor navigate medication a bit better. Alongside bettering my health, I can also see how many hours of sleep I get, so if I have an unproductive or productive day, I can check if my sleep impacted that activity.

4. Habit Tracker

I used to track habits by month, but switched to individual weeks when I started using weekly layouts more often. It’s less of a “habit” thing at that point, and more of a “daily task” thing, but they’re still relevant to keep track of! I find one spot for tracking is easier to write it down once than to rewrite the tasks every day. Tracking habits in a month can also be combined with tracking other monthly things, like paychecks, menstruation, and bills.

5. Bill Tracker

This was so useful when I was essentially the treasurer with room mates in university. I handled all the money for rent, water, electricity, gas, and Internet. Keeping track of bills included keeping track of:

  • the amount
  • the due date
  • the automatic withdrawal date
  • how much my room mates sent
  • the date they paid

Thankfully, we subsidised the costs of utilities by renting out our driveway, so I would also mark down any deductions to the bills. This is also useful if you have multiple properties (owning or renting), or you’re trying to budget your finances. Other aspects you can include are utility usage (the actual amount used) to see your usage habits.


Trackers can be used on a weekly, monthly, or yearly basis. I tracked bills through the year, and I now track moods throughout the day. How long and the timeline you use for your tracker are entirely up to you and your needs.

Trackers are one of my favourite part about the bullet journal’s flexibility. They help me be more mindful and aware of myself and what’s going on in my life—and those are two of the reasons why I started bullet journalling.

Bullet Journal July Weekly Layouts

At the start of this month, I did something I normally don’t do: I drew all the weekly spreads for the month. I wanted to test out how productive I am if I just do all of the layouts in one go. When I make my monthly spreads, I have to set out a large amount of time anyway—and if a certain weekly layout design has worked, why not do it for more than one week?

Each layout has the same structure: 7 days, a sleep tracker, and 2 blank boxes. My sleep tracker also has the added function of being a good spot for me to note the time I take my medication, so I don’t forget and so I can see how it affects my sleep.

I don’t think I’ll be using the blank modules/boxes the same way each week. The first week, I had a space for notes and my meal plan and meal log. The notes section looks really messy, and I didn’t have enough space for all my meal planning. This second week, I’m keeping the notes section, and I’m adding a habit tracker again (yay~!). Another week, I might include my goals, too, but this week doesn’t.

The design will change each week depending on the washi tape and colours I use to decorate everything. I recently bought some lovely, soft, watercolour aesthetic washi tape set, and the first week featured some of the rolls. I haven’t decorated for this second week (or any of the future weeks). I want to decorate through the week, just go with the flow.

I’ll admit, I was very relieved this weekend that I didn’t have to sit and copy the last week’s layout, or come up with a new spread. I dove right into planning out my Monday and writing in other notes for the rest of the week. Based off just this first week and my reaction to the second week? I’ll probably do this again for August!

Bullet Journal Monthly Spreads: October 2016

It’s October already! I’m very excited. If you read my post reviewing September, you’d know I’m looking forward to this month. I didn’t get to a very good start, but those days are done and new days are coming.

When I showed off my spreads from September, I used it as a bit of a review for what I wanted to change come October and the monthly spreads. I spent the first two days of October in a depressed pit, so creating these spreads took way longer than I anticipated. But I’m so excited for them!

The first spread is a cover page for October. I love having a refreshing new page to welcome the month. September’s was very different to this pixelated one, and I absolutely adore the confines of the boxes. It reminds me of the good old days of some webdesign trends in the *ahem* younger generations.

I found September’s calendar didn’t work well for me, so I adopted a table with dates on the left side, and various categories and deadlines/schedules/activities for those days. This gives me more room, but also lets me see everything at a glance and make it easy for me to know what’s coming up in a few weeks. It also feels more chronological than the 7-column structure of a calendar, y’know? I kind of regret the numerical calendar on the bottom of the right page—it’s much more spaced out than I’d like. But, c’est la vie. I can always cover it up if I really, truly hate it.

My habit and health tracker got the least changes. I eliminated a few things I neglected to track during September, and refurbished them onto a daily spread to test out this first week of October. I also decided to bring in colour. I’m using FriXion markers in a set colour palette (the blues and greens) in a pattern. Last month, I used different symbols for when the habit was present or when it wasn’t. At the end, it looked very cluttered. I reasoned, If I don’t do the habit or healthy thing, then I shouldn’t get to mark anything down. Let it be nothing.

I’m also very much in love with the weekly spread I did. It’s a variation on the last week (which I have yet to show, heh) with some differences in how I structure the daily logs. I promise I’ll show some pictures soon!

The monthly spreads in the bullet journal always take up the most of my time. They are more long-standing than the weekly or daily logs, so I find I consider the look and content much more. But I’m very happy with this month’s! We’ll see how well I keep up with some habits and where I fall off the wagon.

I’m preparing (well, waiting…) to move my BuJo to a new notebook. I’m so excited to finally have a dot grid book! I ordered one from The Book Depository—along with class texts for my final semester, hell yeah—and I’m expecting it to arrive next week.

And of course next week I’ll have a post all about moving into a new bullet journal.

(No promises; post deliveries can be delayed. It might not be another 10 days until it arrives—but I’m hoping.)

But for today, riding off the previous bullet journal post, about finding inspiration, I thought I would continue and show some of my favourite spreads.

I work mostly with daily logs, but have since incorporated a few monthly and weekly logs. I figure, “I’m moving out of this book soon; I may as well try new things before the fresh start.”

So, below are pictures of the spreads, along with what I liked and disliked. I hope you can get a few ideas for yourself!

Daily Logs

Daily logs are primarily what I use in my bullet journal, so I have an abundance of them.

Disliked: pretty much everything else. This spread was close to when I still used signifiers in a dual-column display, along with putting spreads in the index.

Liked: the centered time codex is my favourite part, but I also love the quote (sha-bam, promotion for my recent post about “Feeling It” versus doing it); the divide between “Tasks” and “Agenda” really helped me plan out my day better.

Disliked: I… can’t think of anything I dislike. I love this spread. This is my favourite. I love that washi tape.

Liked: Everything! Especially the doodles for where I had my giant cooking/meal prep time!

Disliked: It’s very bland and not as colourful as I would have liked. Some more markers or washi tape would have made this spread as darling as the previous one.

Liked: My energy trackers, particularly the horizontal one. This was a brief stint that I know I’ll return to once I have my dot grid notebook.

Disliked: I preferred having the time tracker in the center as a divider, so having them to the side or at the bottom really didn’t jive well with me.

Monthly Logs

In the middle of July, after I returned to Windsor, I invested more time into my monthly logs. I knew I needed a long glance at the weeks for my freelance work to be planned out (and prepared for).

Liked: Having a calendar was beneficial, and I liked the tracker.

Disliked: The fact that it’s not a full month really bugged me, but I didn’t want to bother putting in the previous week and a half (and taking up more space than necessary). The tracker wasn’t used as much as I hoped (clearly) because it was just on this page. I need a reminder more often so I know what I’m tracking.

I moved (well, duplicated) a tracker-type thing to a weekly spread. This is easier for me to check off, especially because it references the goals for the week. I loved this layout, since it gave me a small calendar look, listed the deadlines (I don’t like them cramped onto a calendar), and gave me tons of space. A+ would do again.


I hope you can find a bit of inspiration here. I’m very, very excited to move into my new dot grid bullet journal once it comes in! Doing this mini review of my spreads has helped me figure out what I really want to include in the new one. I’m filled with ideas and excitement.

Month In Review: April 2016

The end of April means my summer has begun. Technically, the summer solstice isn’t until June 20, but once Canada hits May Two-Four, we’re all in summer mode. May Two-Four is actually Victoria Day weekend, but don’t ask me why we have a holiday honouring this queen. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Canadians usually take the long weekend to barbecue, drink beer, and enjoy milder weather—along with fireworks and other pyrotechnics. While I was in Windsor the majority of April, the weather felt like early summer. Despite the break from school, I do not look forward to the heat. Give me cool, breezy, and/or rainy, and I’m a happy squid.

A single adjective for April was rewarding.

I finished classes and took my exams this month. 4 of my 5 grades are processed, and I’m so pleased that I managed over an 80% in those classes! I think, this month, I really applied myself to what was important when it was important. Having my boyfriend visit me was also a huge treat. He and I hadn’t seen each other since January, so having so much free time together—especially since I didn’t have the pressure of school, whether it was attending classes or preparing for the next semester—delighted me.

In May, I look forward to
  • A wedding.
  • Some time in my quiet hometown with my dad and brother.
  • Making progress with my freelance editing and formatting.
  • Reading more. Currently reading THE TWO TOWERS and it’s been pleasant. I’m hoping to use Goodreads more this month.
  • Having time to write! This is the biggest one. I’m aiming to make some serious progress on my WIPs (namely the high fantasy one). I have made so many excuses recently for why I haven’t been writing, but that time is done. Now I can’t make excuses. Let the hustle begin.

Month In Review: February 2016

Goodbye, February. You were an arbitrary selection of days, interspersed with different seasons. I mean, come on, going through a 50-degrees-Celsius range in one month, from -45 to 15… That’s a little ridiculous.

I didn’t have a good month, but that’s nothing to dwell on. Headcold. Emotional roller coaster. Discouragement. Onward to March.

This month, I achieved:
  • Some new writing thanks to WTH’s February Challenge. I wrote some poems, some reflective non-fiction, and the beginnings to some short stories! Not every day produced something good, of course, but I was writing. Hallelujah.
  • Confidence in my identity as A Writer. I feel less afraid than I did before.

More about my triggers for my eating disorder and mental health. Seriously, figuring out what makes me want to do certain things feels so much better than being able to fight back. It’s like I have an advantage against myself.

This month, I got bored of:

University. But, hey, that’s standard for me. I’m bored easily when I don’t have reasonable challenges—and university right now, with my course selection, has no challenges at all. (Unless you consider “frustration” a challenge. I don’t.)

Next month, I’m looking forward to:
  • Getting closer to finishing this semester—and, by extension, my degree. I have 6 weeks of classes, then a few exams unfortunately spread out through the next month. I’m determined not to flake off.
  • Spending time with my rabbit. I’m trying not to be sad about his old age.
Next month, I’m going to make the positive change of:

Attending therapy weekly. I had to reschedule my appointment from last Friday (February 26) to this Friday (March 4), and thus only had one appointment in all of February. I think I’m starting to really feel some progress and learn more about myself, so I want to continue relying on my guide (AKA my counsellor).

Next month, I’m making the effort to:

Outline, plan, write, immerse myself, and make progress on THE PILGRIMAGE. Of all my novels, I feel this one has the most potential. I decided on a major change recently—removing a character entirely, in order to tighten up character arcs and thus plot—and have found excitement. Normally my writing has a small shadow of fear lingering, but this time? I’m less afraid. I have less expectations set upon myself. I’m enthusiastic.

If I had to write a book about this month, I would call it:

River Bottom Blues and Bubbles. I’ve been extremely emotional this month. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
